How it works

  1. Choose a tab: One post, Several posts or Giveaway impact.
  2. Type the numbers from your app's insights, or paste rows from a spreadsheet.
  3. Read the rates. Each one shows its formula, so you can check the math.
  4. For a giveaway, compare the giveaway post with the average of the 5 posts before and the 5 posts after it.

Questions and answers

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Add up a post's likes, comments, saves and shares, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For example, 70 interactions on an account with 1,000 followers is 70 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 7%. For several posts, work out each post's rate, then take the average or the median.

Followers or reach: which is better?

Rate by followers is easy to compare between accounts, because follower counts are public. Rate by reach divides by the accounts that actually saw the post, so it shows how the post did with the people who saw it. Only the account owner can see reach, in the app's insights. Rate by views works the same way for videos and Reels. Pick one and use the same one every time you compare.

What's a good engagement rate?

It varies by platform, account size, niche and type of post, so this page doesn't give a single target. We only show a typical figure when we can cite a recent public source for it. The most useful comparison is your own history: work out the median rate of your recent posts in the Several posts tab, then check whether new posts beat it.

Do giveaways increase engagement?

A giveaway post usually gets more comments than a normal post when entering means commenting or tagging friends. Whether engagement stays higher afterwards is a separate question. Use the Giveaway impact tab to compare the average of 5 posts before, the giveaway post itself and the average of 5 posts after.

Do giveaway followers stay?

Often they don't. In one case study of six sponsored Instagram giveaways tracked over 2019–2020, on average 61% of giveaway participants unfollowed the sponsors within 2 weeks of the winner announcement (Social Media Examiner, 2020). Compare your follower count before the giveaway with the count 2 weeks after it ends.
