Options

Balance by skill

Add a skill from 1 to 10 after each name, like "Ana, 7". Teams are filled in a snake draft, and the totals are shown.

Pick a captain for each team

One random captain per team, marked with a star.

Keep apart

People in a pair always end up on different teams.

How it works

  1. Paste the names, one per line. Blank lines and duplicates are removed.
  2. Choose the number of teams, or how many people go in each team.
  3. Turn on the options you need: skill balancing, captains, keep-apart pairs and team names.
  4. Press Make teams. Lock any team you want to keep, then shuffle the rest again.
  5. Copy the teams as text, download a CSV file or show them full screen.

Questions and answers

How do I split people into random groups?

Paste the names, one per line, up to 2,000. Choose the number of teams or how many people you want in each team, then press Make teams. You can copy the teams as text, download them as a CSV file or show them full screen on a projector.

Can I balance teams by skill?

Yes. Turn on Balance by skill and add a number from 1 to 10 after each name, like "Ana, 7" or "Ana 7". People are handed out from the highest skill down in a snake draft: team 1 to the last team, then back again. People with the same skill go in random order, and each team shows its skill total. Anyone without a number counts as the median skill of the list.

What happens with leftover people?

With a number of teams, the sizes are as even as possible, so 10 people in 3 teams gives 4, 3 and 3. With people per team, you choose: "Spread across teams" adds the extra people one each to the teams, so 10 people at 4 per team gives two teams of 5. "Smaller last team" fills each team to the size you picked and puts the rest in a smaller last team, so you get 4, 4 and 2.

Can I keep two people apart?

Yes. Add a keep-apart pair for any two people who shouldn't be on the same team. The generator swaps people between teams until every pair is split, and it tries up to 200 random starting points. If no split works, for example when three people must all be apart but there are only two teams, it tells you which pair is blocking it.

Is it random?

Yes. Every shuffle starts from a random seed made by your browser's secure random number generator (the Web Crypto API), and the names are shuffled with the Fisher–Yates method. Without extra options, every split is equally likely. Your list stays in your browser and is never sent anywhere.
